Nestling in the lea of Pendle Hill, The Assheton Arms in Downham, near Clitheroe is a delightful, traditional country pub situated in a picturesque village in the beautiful Ribble Valley. We have no electronic distractions, save a little well chosen background music, and we strive to produce an excellence in good home cooked food.
David and Wendy Busby, the licensees, have hosted this delightful country pub for 23 years and offer a mouth-watering range of food to suit all tastes but specialising in seafood. It is not unusual to have oysters, scallops, lobster, monkfish and tuna steaks all together on the daily Specials Board. At certain busy times, though, you may have to wait as all food is cooked properly, and to order.
There are records of licensed houses in the Downham area going back to 1399. The Assheton Arms was originally a farmhouse brewing beer for their workers, and the fireplace can be dated back to 1765. In 1872 it became the George and Dragon and in the 1950s it was re-named the Assheton Arms in honour of Ralph Asshetons contribution to government during the Second World War (See History).
We are very careful never to serve ale during Divine Service, as we calculate the fine to a poor unfortunate landlord in 1646 to have been some £600 by todays standards for that particular offence!
We have a small function suite, which is suitable for all types of parties, and the pub makes an excellent finishing venue for car rallies and treasure hunts, or walking tours and the like. We also have plenty of car parking, patio benches for the Summer months and a variety of traditional and modern beers, including a speciality German Black lager.
We hope that you enjoy your visit whether you are having a meal or just taking a drink in the country. Children and dogs are made most welcome and we are totally Non Smoking. Do come and see us at an early opportunity.
